Hidden pearls: the Museum of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure

The fine museum of the workshop of semi-precious stones, founded by the Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici in 1588, houses samples of inlay artefacts created with the astonishing technique of the so called “commesso fiorentino” throughout three centuries. The museum includes a section showing the raw materials as well the original work tools, something that makes the whole process even more astounding.
