The Battle of Legnano

Taking place at the time of the Lombard cities’ victory for independence against the German Holy Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in 1176, The Battle of Legnano is Verdi’s most patriotic opera that he composed in the tumultuous 1848, a year of revolutions throughout Europe. Staged on the eve of the Roman Republic founding, one of the most inspiring episodes of the Risorgimento, it was a unique case of politics and music going hand in hand met with enthusiastic public acclaim.
